Holiday Shopping at The Huntington's Bookstore & More

Named the best museum gift shop by L.A. Weekly in 2008

Museum shops are a great place to find unique gifts for friends and family during the holiday season.

Named the best museum gift shop by L.A. Weekly in 2008, the Bookstore & More at The Huntington has an especially varied selection of merchandise inspired by its diverse collections— everything from jewelry to contemporary poetry to marmalade made from oranges grown right on the historic estate.

For the art connoisseur, look for items related to special exhibitions like this fall’s “A ‘New and Native’ Beauty: The Art and Craft of Greene & Greene.”  There is a wonderful selection of Arts and Crafts gifts in a range of prices:  hand-crafted ceramics, decorative tiles, craftsman-style clocks, note cards, prints, books, and accessories.   An ideal gift for bungalow lover might be a welcome mat ($45) featuring the designs of Dard Hunter.  The Huntington’s extensive William Morris collection, with its beautiful textile designs, has inspired a wide range of floral printed items, from scarves and neckties to placemats and coasters.  Morris’ popular golden lily design adorns a lovely selection of tableware including plates ($25 - $35) and serving trays ($80 - $98).

Chinese merchandise reflects the ancient and beautiful culture that is celebrated in The Huntington’s new Garden of Flowing Fragrance, Liu Fang Yuan.  Jade jewelry, Chinese porcelain, calligraphy sets, music CDs, apparel, and accessories are just a few examples.  Priced to suit every budget, statues of Buddha are available in wood, bronze, porcelain, or resin ($9- $225).  Dress up a holiday wardrobe in Asian flair with an intricately carved bracelet ($18) or an embroidered purse ($18 and up).

For the science buff, look for toys, books, and collectibles that tie in to The Huntington’s newest attraction, Dibner Hall of the History of Science.  Kids and adults alike will love the rainbow maker ($25), and reproductions of a 19th century compass or an 18th century sundial ($55 each) make distinctive gifts.

There are great ideas in every corner of the shop:  traditional Christmas puddings to spice up a holiday meal; hand-painted glass ornaments featuring The Huntington’s Japanese, Chinese, and Rose gardens; botanical-themed cookie cutters and cake pans; games, puzzles, and children’s books; the “year in the gardens” 2009 calendar; and everything needed to host an elegant afternoon tea, from teapots to lemon curd and clotted cream.

And don’t forget the stocking stuffers.  Huntington gift cards are available in any dollar amount and can be used for purchases in the store.  Gift memberships are another thoughtful choice that can be enjoyed all year long.

The Huntington Bookstore & More is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and weekends from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  For information, call (626) 405-2142.
